A Dog-Friendly Escape at Drovers Rest: Muddy Boots, Fire-Cooked Feasts & Total Switch-Off
Tucked away on the border of Wales and Herefordshire, near Hay-on-Wye, it’s the kind of place where time slows right down. Think rolling countryside, big skies, muddy boots by the door… and the sort of quiet you didn’t realise you needed until you’re in it. It couldn’t have been more us.
The Stay: Why Drovers Cottage Was Perfect for Us
When you travel with dogs, where you stay makes all the difference.
We stayed in Drovers Cottage, and it was exactly what we needed.
Private, peaceful, and with enough space that we could properly relax without worrying about busy footpaths, or unexpected noise.
Drovers Rest isn’t about packed itineraries or ticking off tourist spots.
It’s about slowing down. Mornings started gently, coffee in hand, dogs exploring, no rush to be anywhere.
Days were filled with countryside walks, muddy paws, and that fresh-air tiredness you only get from being outside for hours.
Evenings? That’s where it really comes into its own.

The Food: Fire-Cooked Feasts You Won’t Forget
The fire-cooked feast is such a big part of the experience here - and it’s honestly something special.
Everything is cooked over open flames, with this relaxed, communal feel that makes you want to linger a little longer. It’s hearty, comforting, and exactly what you want after a day outside.
There’s something about being wrapped up, a bit windswept, with tired dogs at your feet, eating incredible food cooked over fire… it just hits differently.

The Dogs: Living Their Best Life
If you’re here for dog-friendly recommendations (which I know most of you are), this is one of those places where dogs are genuinely welcomed, not just allowed.
Our dogs were in their elements - running, exploring, fully embracing the muddy-boot lifestyle.
And Dougie? Relaxed, settled, and comfortable - which, if you have a reactive dog, you’ll know is everything. Though worth noting the owners do have dogs that roam the grounds.
Why This Stay Stands Out
We’ve stayed in a lot of “dog-friendly” places over the years, but this one felt different.
It’s not just about allowing dogs - it’s about creating an environment where both dogs and owners can properly unwind.
For us, that looked like:
- space and privacy
- quiet surroundings
- thoughtful accommodation choices
- and an atmosphere that encourages you to slow down
It’s the kind of place you leave feeling lighter than when you arrived.
As if all of this wasn't enough, you can also visit the farm animals like sheep, alpacas & ponies. My heart can't deal!!!
The local area:
Perfectly located for hikes within the Brecon Beacons, strolls around Hay-on-Wye exploring book shops & cafes, or meandering through the rolling countryside, there really is something for everyone here.

Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a dog-friendly stay that goes beyond the basics - somewhere you can truly switch off, embrace the outdoors, and not feel on edge the whole time, Drovers Rest is one to have on your list.
