One of the things I liked about this walk was how easy it was to get started. There’s a large car park at the beginning of the route, so you don’t have to worry too much about finding somewhere to leave the car before setting off. It's National Trust though, so there's a fee if you're not a member.

The beginning of the walk is probably the toughest part. It starts off fairly steep and craggy, so you’ll definitely feel like you’re climbing rather than simply having a gentle stroll. It’s nothing particularly technical, but sensible footwear is definitely recommended, especially if the weather has been wet. Infact, I'd say this route isn't safe at all in wet weather.

Once you’ve tackled the initial climb, though, the walk becomes much more manageable. The views from Walla Crag And then you reach the reason you’re here…The views over Derwentwater and the surrounding Lake District fells are absolutely beautiful.

It’s one of those walks where you can see the landscape changing as you go, and the views just keep getting better. Walla Crag gives you that classic Lake District scenery without needing to commit to one of the longer, more strenuous fell walks.

We also loved how peaceful it was. We were expecting the route to be much busier, particularly as we were visiting during summer, so having stretches of the walk almost completely to ourselves was a real bonus.

After the steeper start, the route soon levels out and becomes a lovely, steady descent.
This was probably my favourite part of the walk because you can relax a little more and enjoy the scenery rather than concentrating on the climb. And, of course, you get plenty more opportunities to stop and admire those views over Derwentwater on the way down.
Would I recommend Walla Crag?
